Centrally Situated In Port Elizabeth Guest House – Newington Place…

We are situated in Newington Street, Richmond Hill on a quiet tree-lined lane, filled with historic and gracefully restored buildings. The peace of the picturesque neighbourhood belies its location in central Port Elizabeth where the heartbeat of the city pulses nearby and the main N2 highway that charters motorists in and out the Bay is but a few streets down. The saying goes that in Port Elizabeth nothing is more than 15 minutes away and with Richmond Hill this most definitely rings true.

The position of the suburb puts it not far from the airport, beachfront, hospitals and top Port Elizabeth schools as well as within walking distance of a large variety of restaurants and trendy retail outlets, making Newington Place the ideal site for a weekend getaway, as a base for exploring the greater Port Elizabeth area, or for business travellers who need to swiftly get around the city.

The recently renovated Victorian guesthouse sweeps across a double plot, surrounded by gorgeous gardens filled with trees and fragrant and colourful plants providing a serene haven close to Port Elizabeth’s centre. Inside old world charm meets understated elegance and peace as antique wooden floors and large, airy sash windows are interspersed with modern touches such as crisp percale linen and sizable walk-in showers, ensuring the ultimate in comfort.

Antique furniture, crystal and silver contrast beautifully against a palette of blues and creams, completing the eclectic atmosphere while technology such as flat screen T.V.’s, hairdriers and the availability of WiFi see to the needs of contemporary lifestyle.

Accommodation options are varied with the main house offering five spacious bedrooms, while a self-catering family cottage and another self-contained room present privacy in the garden. All the rooms have gorgeous garden views and most of the bedrooms are equipped with flat screen T.V’s. Rooms are serviced daily with fresh linen and towels provided.

The main house includes a kitchen, lounge and dining area, ideal for mingling over a pre-dinner drink or sinking into a plush couch to unwind and reflect.

Outside there is a large communal swimming pool, built in braai and el fresco bar for visitors to enjoy as well as a newly built deck overlooking the garden. Secure off-street parking is provided and guests have the option of requesting breakfast or taking a short walk to explore the numerous culinary options in the surrounding neighbourhood.

The Richmond Hill area is a highly popular social hub that has recently taken café culture to new heights and also holds much of the city’s historically significant landmarks, making for a quirky and individualistic neighbourhood that overflows with culture, art and joie de vivre.

Even the restaurants and retail outlets in the suburb retain a unique style and charm that is hard to ignore and not far distant from what one would experience in an Italian piazza or a French sidewalk café.

Newington Place staff are on hand to respond to any queries as well as provide assistance with restaurant bookings and organised tours.

Restaurants

Richmond Activities and centrally situate Newington Place in the eclectic and up-market suburb of Richmond Hill.  The area is a playground for the trendy Port Elizabeth crowd and favoured by foodies for its diverse selection of restaurants, coffee shops and bakeries.  Whether it is nine o’clock in the morning or eleven o’clock at night, the neighbourhood is sure to be peppered with people who have come to tantalise their taste buds and chill over a cappuccino or glass of wine.

Port Elizabeth Guest House - Richmond Activities & SurroundsRichmond Hill is often compared to Melville in Johannesburg due to the sidewalk café society feel that has emerged in the suburb in recent years and the laid back vibe that generally ensconces anyone who happens to meander its streets.

Running through the heart of the area is Stanley Street, where restaurants via for customers and tables spill out onto the sidewalks.  This is probably the easiest spot to catch a bite, as choices are varied and all within easy walking distance of each other, so having a sundowner cocktail at a trendy wine bar before walking a few steps down the street for a juicy streak is a common practice.

From pastries and breads to sushi, pizza, seafood and sandwiches, you can find it all in Stanley Street, the perfect place for breakfast, lunch or dinner where the tables scattered along the pavements are always occupied by happy diners, infusing the area with laughter and talk, while at night the trees glow with the twinkle of fairy lights and the streets come alive with dinner patrons.

Popular spots among local residence include Fushin Sushi Bar, The Deli Street Café and Yaiyai’s for meals, Vovo Telo for artisanal breads and pastries and For the Love of Wine for some of the best wine collections in the Bay.  The Royal Deli is within easy walking distance of Stanley Street and will tempt your palette with authentic Indian flavours while the BeerYard is favoured for its tasty craft beers, chilled vibe and great handmade burgers and pizzas.

The Old Austria, one of Port Elizabeth’s  most long standing and renowned fine dining restaurants is also just a short drive away, and the Coachman, another established firm favourite, dishes up Greek specialities and fabulous steaks all with stunning sea views.

About the Owners

Fasie and Fiona Malherbe

Fasie & Fiona Malherbe (Owners do not reside on the property)

Newington Place Guesthouse is the latest addition to the extensive accommodation collection run and operated by the Cape St Francis Resort in the Eastern Cape.  Owners Fasie and Fiona Malherbe are both well-seasoned travellers who, over the years, have successfully acquired and operated numerous 4 and 5 star accommodation establishments, among them renowned The Cape St Francis Resort, luxurious Casa Malcampo in Mozambique and the exclusive Villa Tapenade on the island of Lastovo in Croatia.

Newington Place is the newest establishment to grace their portfolio of properties and brings with it the years of knowledge and experience that the couple have garnered in the hospitality industry.

The recently renovated Newington Place draws its sophisticated flair from Fiona’s artistic eye with much of the furnishings been hand sourced from Burma and the colour palette mixing soothing shades of creams, blues, greens and greys, similar to the light and breezy décor she chose for the Cape St Francis Resort.

Dark antique wood is offset beautifully against neutral backgrounds and unexpected flashes of colour in the pieces of art that adorn the guesthouse.  Art is another of Fiona’s passions and during her years of travel she has acquired numerous interesting and unique pieces, many of which now rest beautifully at Newington Place.

The Malherbe family is a close knit one with many of their family members involved in the business and this personal attachment can be felt when staying at any of their accommodation establishments as nothing is standard and no ask is too big.  Whether you are merely overnighting at the guest house or using it as a base to explore Port Elizabeth and its surrounds, the staff of Newington Place will be able to assist you with tour information, directions and special places of interest while ensuring that all their guest’s needs are fulfilled.  Enjoy your stay Newington Place -offering privacy and luxury without being stuffy or ostentatious and ensuring the ultimate in comfort and contentment.
